Uncle stole from my little brother

2 days ago I (20F) saw my uncle (50M) go into our house when nobody was at home. I just came back from shopping when I saw him running out. (He never goes into our house because my mom and him aren’t on good terms) He probably doesn’t know I saw him. We didn’t tell him anything because nothing was missing. Today my brother (17M) called me saying all his money was gone. He had around 3k$. I don’t know what to do, i will tell my dad but then what? Whole family will fall apart.

He isn’t financially stabile, lives with his mom after divorce. We live in the same house, he and his mom (my grandma) are on first floor and we are on second. Those floors are like separate houses if that makes sense. And it isn’t normal that he goes into our space.
If my grandma finds out, she will probably kick him out, and he has nowhere to go.
How can he steal money from his own little nephew??? He worked 3 summer breaks in a row to earn that, and now he has nothing. I feel sooo bad for him 🙁
He probably won’t admit it, i don’t know how to get that money back.

Btw english is not my first language so sorry for mistakes.

UPDATE: He came knocking on my door, i was home alone. He asked if we found the money. I told him everything that i saw, and he just lost it. He said that he was feeding my dog in front of our door lol. I know thats not true bacause why the fuck would he feed our dog that he hates in front of the door??? He basically said that he wasnt in the house, but i know what i saw. My dad just gave up on this because he doesn’t want to lose his brother. I will go to the police tomorrow if he doesnt confess. I’m alone in this now since dad wont help..

TL;DR: Uncle stole all money my brother had

  1. Tell your brother to call the police and report it. Give a statement with times to the police. Let them deal with it. If your parent is angry, ask them would they rather have your brother think one of us stole his money, or the truth that a brother you don’t trust did. Tell them to change the locks toi

  2. Shame on the uncle. No matter how down on luck he is, stealing is stealing. And stealing from family is the ultimate low. He deserves to be caught. He obviously has a roof over his head and food in his stomach, so there was absolutely no need for him to be stealing from anyone. I’ve tried to give money to homeless people and they wouldn’t take it. Tell your family what happened. If they decide to involve the police, that’s their choice. Your conscience will be clean. Good luck!

  3. Besides the fact that stealing is wrong and you should absolutely report this… I have a question:

Those 3k are american dollars right? If so why does your little brother have that much money… in cash? I mean who keeps 3000$ in cash at home?

  4. Do what is right. It is not right for your Brother to suffer because your Uncle has no morals, and is a thief. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is the only right thing. Call the police, do it because you witnessed your Uncle leaving the home, that he said he was never in. It sucks you are the only one willing to hold your Uncle accountable. Your Uncle deserves to suffer whatever he has coming. He should be thrown out, who wants a thief around them. Your Uncle is the scum of the earth.

  5. The details of your family situation don’t matter in this at all. It is very simple. It comes down to right and wrong. You need to speak up for your little brother. He is the innocent one that is hurt in this. Your uncle is a grown ass man and knew what he was doing. It sounds like he’s also the cause of much of the problems in the family dynamics so he should go. Protect and fight for your little brother. I promise you he won’t forget what you do. If you do the right thing this could come back to be very helpful in the future. Or it could come back to hurt you if you do nothing. At the very least change the locks or buy a door handle with a lock and put them on the bedrooms. Also security cameras would have been helpful don’t you think?

  6. Tell your grandmother and mum what happened and go to the police tell them and take this further. If he gets away with it and no one challenges it he will keep doing this and you will see more and more stuff go missing
